ANFP and the GS1 Initiative

ANFP President and CEO Bill St. John, CAE was recently interviewed about ANFP’s participation in the GS1 Standards Initiative.  “We decided to get involved with the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative primarily because of our industry’s need for better food-safety protocols,” he says. Click here to read the entire article titled, How Adopting GS1 Standards Can Streamline the Supply Chain.

Another Brick in the Walk!

ANFPs’ new Nutrition & Foodservice Education Foundation (NFEF) invites you to become a permanent part of a bright future by purchasing a personalized brick that will be part of the “Foundation for the Future” walkway at the ANFP headquarters building.  This special walkway will showcase ANFP members, chapters, corporate partners, schools, and NFEF supporters who want to leave a visible and lasting legacy to the future of our industry.  Proceeds from brick sales benefit the Foundation, which supports and strengthens the overall nutrition and foodservice profession through education, best practices and standard setting, research support, and public awareness.

ANFP Announces New Online Course: “Modified Diets & Concepts in MNT”

ANFP has added a new online course to its educational toolbox for CDMs.  “Modified Diets & Concepts in MNT” guides you through the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the new MyPlate icon, and the DASH diet, which all provide a foundation for healthy eating.  It discusses MNT trends and typical issues many CDMs deal with, including dehydration, weight loss, diabetes, dysphagia, food allergies, tube feeding, lab values, and food-drug interactions.  The course also describes disease states and the modifications, nutrition interventions, and MNT concepts used to treat these diseases – including the CDM’s role in the nutrition care process.

This course is approved for 25 CE hours. The cost is just $199 for ANFP members – that’s only $8 per CE hour.

Food Allergy Awareness Week Planned for May 13-19

The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) created Food Allergy Awareness Week to educate people about food allergies.  The organization provides various free resources -- including brochures, posters, and presentations -- to help raise awareness.

On a related note, on April 26, the governor of Virginia signed a bill into law requiring schools to maintain a supply of non-student specific (stock) epinephrine.  Named “Amelia’s Law,” it honors a seven-year old Virginia girl who died in school this past January from an anaphylactic reaction to peanuts.  FAAN is continuing to gain support for the School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, a bill that encourages states to ensure that stock epinephrine is available in all schools and that school staff members are trained to administer it.  To date, 65 senators and members of the House have signed on as co-sponsors of this legislation.  You can get involved by downloading and personalizing a letter of support (sample provided on the FAAN website).  Click here to learn more.
